Chennai Unveils New Parking Policy and Introduces Pink Autos for Women Drivers

Chennai, June 22, 2024 — In a progressive move to enhance urban mobility and empower women, Chennai has introduced a comprehensive vehicle parking policy alongside a novel initiative to launch pink autos driven by women. These measures aim to streamline parking management and provide safer transportation options for women.

New Vehicle Parking Policy

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a revamped vehicle parking policy for Chennai, aiming to address the city’s escalating parking woes. The policy encompasses several key strategies to optimize space usage and enhance the efficiency of urban transport.

Under this policy, designated parking zones will be established throughout the city, prioritizing high-traffic areas and commercial hubs. The plan includes the installation of advanced parking meters and automated payment systems to facilitate a seamless parking experience for residents and visitors.

Furthermore, the policy emphasizes the development of multi-level parking complexes to tackle the scarcity of parking spaces in densely populated regions. These complexes will incorporate eco-friendly technologies, such as solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations, aligning with the city’s sustainability goals.

Introduction of Pink Autos

In a landmark initiative to boost women’s empowerment and safety, the Chennai Corporation has announced a subsidy scheme for women to purchase pink autos. This scheme is designed to encourage more women to enter the auto-rickshaw driving profession, traditionally dominated by men.

The government will provide a subsidy of ₹1 lakh to 200 women to help them buy pink auto-rickshaws. These vehicles will be distinctly colored to signify that they are driven by women, making them easily recognizable and preferred by women passengers seeking safer travel options.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve women’s safety in public transportation and create more job opportunities for women in the city. The pink autos will be equipped with GPS and panic buttons to ensure the safety of both drivers and passengers.

As the city rolls out these new policies and initiatives, residents and visitors can look forward to a more streamlined and secure urban transport system, reflecting Chennai’s commitment to innovation and inclusivity.
